Problems opening Quicken Personal Plus 2009

Dec 20, 2008 11:39AM PST

Having used Quicken since 1995 with no problems, I have just attempted to install the Quicken Personal Plus 2009 AUS edition on my PC (OS XP).
Every time I log on to Quicken, I continue to get the "Welcome to Quicken" screen, where I have to select the " I am already a Quicken user" then "Select your data file and open a file located on this computer". Next step is " Use the last backup of Quicken" which is installed in My Documents. Then insert my password and after this the program will/may work most of the times, but sometimes it just disappear (closes down) and I havee to start the Quicken program again. It always come s back with the "Welcome to Quicken" screen. Always!!!
When speaking to Quicken here in Australia at $ 5 per minute, I was told in a very technical way to reinstall the program and that the problem may be a conflict from the file in My Documents where I am restoring the backup from. Otherwise no help. I don't understand.
I have now deleted the program and reinstalled it 3 times and the same happens every time.
Also when I tried to back up on the 21st December, the screen told me my last backup was on the 3rd June 2008 and it never updated to the new date.
I have most of the data I have put in over the years in the "new" program, but lost 13 years of Price History from the Portfolio file.
The only external backup I have (disk) is from Quicken 2008 dated 3rd June 2008, but I still have Quicken 2008 installed on the Hard Drive.
Can somebody please help me with this to me huge problem.
How do I get rid of the "Welcome to Quicken" and the other screens and just log in normal, and how can I restore/save my data?
If more infomation is needed, I will be happy to supply it.

Just so you know.

When I encounter a problem like this I often find the machine has other issues. Those other issues help to paint a picture of what to do next. For now I'd run disk cleanup, the usual scans you see in these forums for spyware (MBAM, SUPERANTISPYWARE) and tell what these find as well as what other problems this PC has.

Found Trojan.Agent
Dec 20, 2008 6:01PM PST

Bob,
I did as you advised. Ran the disk clean up, scanned with Trend Micro Internet Security Pro,which just showed cookies.
Downloaded and ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware which found 2 Registry Keys infected.
1. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{549b5ca7-4a86-11d7-a4df-000874180bb3} (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
2.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{549b5ca7-4a86-11d7-a4df-000874180bb3} (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Then I downloaded and ran SUPERANTISPYWARE that found 3 Adware Tracking Cookies. Now removed.

Should I now try Quicken again from where it is at present in My Document or uninstall the 2009 edition and reinstall it again from what was my last backup?
Your help is greatly appriciated. Thanks

I would try
Dec 20, 2008 9:43PM PST

What appeared to fix it before. But if it's working I would stop fixing it.

The trojan items are troubling. Trojans can do damage that we can't fix automatically since trojans are under remote control by people. They can change permissions on files, registry keys and more. Sadly there is no do this cure.

But if this was my machine I might try the following.

1. Make a new user in the machine. Give that new user administrator capabilities and then move to that account.

2. Use this article to move -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151

3. Ask in our Spyware Forum if anyone has details on what those trojans do. Be sure to google about those trojans since all this is volunteer and share your issues with Quicken. Ask if anyone thinks the two issues are related. The answer will vary from helper to helper. For me, I know to expect odd things when trojans are found.

Hope this helps,
Bob

Quicken has Blown it
Jan 6, 2009 11:39PM PST

The problem is Quicken
I have similar issues after attempting to update to 2009.
I have 3 computers and 2008 was working on all of them.
However after updating to 2009 on 2 machines neither one will open the backup quicken file
I have resisted the upgrade on the 3rd machine
There are hundreds of postings on this issue and Quicken has somehow managed to corrupt the files in the upgrade process.
Fortunately I was able to print my reports for taxes but certainly I re commend not upgrading Quicken ever it what you have is working.

In fact unless Quicken can find a way to make all its backups compatible going forward with new programs there needs to be a new software developer working on a stable program

So you are telling me that

Quicken's software must operate proper on a machine that had a trojan on it?

Ouch. That's quite a tall order.

I have just experienced...
Jan 6, 2009 11:59PM PST

what appears to be an identical problem to yours. I fiddled with it for two months to no avail.

The thing that finally corrected the issue was a reinstall of Vista. My suspicion is there was a software conflict or some file corruption that prevented proper installation of Quicken. After reinstalling the operating system, first software installed was Quicken Deluxe... it worked well with no issues and has continued to do so even after installing all the old software.

Maybe the reformat was needed as my system seems faster and smoother operating since the format and reinstall a week ago.

Guess we will never know the real problem... go figure!

The Problem is Quicken - Not a Trojan
Jan 14, 2009 5:06AM PST

The problem is Quicken 2009. I am telling you to avoid it at all cost. Go to Amazon and look at the reviews - most all are negative.
It is an inferior product and once it is installed you will be prevented from reinstalling 2008.

I can tell you Intuit has blown it - The only thing I can say is that they did refund my money for this garbage, but that is minor compared to my loss of time and data.

Intuit needs to issue notices and coorections and start making their data files compaible between consecutive versions and for God's sake an complete uninstall included with Quicken so you can get their crap off you computer.
It will not be long until banks refuse a tie-in with their data for download.

Q 2009 still working flawlessly...
Jan 14, 2009 5:51AM PST

Been using Quicken for years without a problem. I am not so sure the problem was with Quicken but rather was with my system.

There are no issues since the proper installation after the operating system was re-installed. As of this time, I am unwilling to place all the blame on Quicken. Others can judge for themselves.

Reckon and Quicken aren't worth the effort
Jul 16, 2009 1:38PM PDT

I have been using Quicken since 1993 and have just done a fresh install of windows 7 on my notebook and have not bothered with Quicken. It's bloatware and an damned cheek to charge $70+ pa for a program that was bug filled and solely responsible for these "trojan" errors...and for God's sake what's with this stockamrket update only after about 9pm?. I will continue to use Money 2005 until it disappears as foreshadowed by MS within the next 3 years. I have created my own excel spreadsheet that reports my finances including stockmarket updates every 10 minutes. I use Acemoney and i have discovered an excellent sourceforge freeware program called ifreebudget. Reckon's Quicken is a disgrace and I have used it everyday since 1993. They've irretrievably lost a customer. BTW is there a fully focussed home finance software discussion forum in Australia? We need one!
