Problems opening html pages of website

by weezypops / October 4, 2010 11:55 PM PDT

Last night my website (www.essexmums.org) was working fine. This morning I can't get onto most of it and get a pop up asking me to save or run a file called essexmums_org, and I have no idea what that is. I can't even get onto the homepage. It happens in both firefox and explorer though I get slightly different pop ups -

Firefox says "You have chosen to open (blank) which is a: Firefox Document from http://www.essexmums.org What should Firefox do with this file?"

IE: "File download - security warning. Do you want to save this file or find a program online to open it. Name: essexmums_org"

Things like my forum and blog, which are created in phpbb3 and wordpress respectively are still working and all the files such as the header etc. are there, yet all the html pages aren't working. I don't understand how this could have happened as I haven't changed anything between last night when it was working and today when it's not.

Also, it's happening for 8/10 of the site users, but not all.

I just saw the post about linking to websites and really hope this doesn't breach those rules - I just thought it would be beneficial if people could look at the site to see what I'm talking about.

You should check your code.

Line 3 of that site has this:
<script></script>

Why did you do that?

To me it looks like the site's code has many errors. And no I don't know why. The site's author should be asked.

It's me!

I'm the site's author so any errors are down to the fact that I'm learning as I go along. I know it's not perfect, but yesterday it was working fine and today it isn't, so this problem doesn't seem to be to do with those errors!

I'm assuming though that if you could see the code you could see the site, so it was working for you?

It didn't work properly

But to the point I could view the code. As soon as I hit the third line of code I knew that it was bad code and stopped reading.

But what could you see?

Could you actually see the homepage though? I can't even get on to that, the problem is happening before the page even loads.

I've taken out that <script></script> error.

As I said, I know the code isn't perfect but it normally looks and works fine, so it's being worked on. The problem here doesn't seem to be anything to do with that though.

Now it loads fine.

No popup this time. Go figure what else you changed.

Remember this is all volunteer so I stop at the first error and that's it.

You could put your code on the HTML validator at w3c if you want to find more errors.
