Problems networking Vista

Sep 4, 2007 10:04PM PDT

I have a home wireless network that has had 4 computers running XP Home Edition and XP Pro for some time sharing files and printers. I have recently added a Vista computer. It can connect to my workgroup and shares the internet connection via my router. The Vista system cannot see the other computers on the network and they can't see the Vista system and as a result I can't share files or printers with it.

What am I missing?

Accounts and firewalls.

You added a new machine so it will have a new account to login, but I didn't read if you added that account to the other machines.

Firewalls seem to always get people too.

Since the computers are being used by my family I haven't...

...set them up with individual accounts. So when the systems are booted up, you don't get the login screen it just goes straight to the desktop. Its always worked fine with the XP systems. Is there a requirement with Vista to create accounts and then matching accounts on the XP systems?

Not only XP but Vista as well.

You will begin to wonder why people don't get the accounts issue.

The firewall issue is easier to understand. Many install such but don't take time to learn what it does.

Then to share a printer that is attached to an XP system,...

...I would have to setup a matching account/password on all systems. Does the account on the printer-attached system have to be logged on for the other systems to access the printer?

Real quick.

If you are on your machine and want to use something on another, an account on both machines please.

I'm going to be very short on words since the issue is deeply documented out there.

Once Everything Is Shared Correctly...

..the machine attached to the shared printer does NOT have to be logged on... BUT, it DOES have to be TURNED ON.

Hope this helps.
