Problems Installing Windows 7 via external hard drive.

Jun 30, 2010 10:53AM PDT

I purchased the ISO for Windows 7 Ultimate, and used PowerISO to mount the ISO onto my CD Drive then I copied the files to my Western Digital 320 GB external hard drive. I did all of the prior requirements that were needed such as making sure the boot code was correct I used the following in command prompt under administrator: bootsect.exe /nt60 /fixmbr. I then proceeded to change the boot order for the external hard drive to boot first and put my current hard drive that is installed booting last in order not to confuse the BIOS. Yet when I restart my computer all that I get is a small blinking underscore, and it will not proceed any further. I know that I could burn the ISO to a DVD-R or put it on a Flash Drive, but I don't have any money currently. Can anyone help me proceed past this point please?

Doesn't seen supportable.

I don't see how you could get the boot information over. Sadly you are a little off the support map.

Just one idea and GOOD LUCK!

"Installing Other Distributions Using UNetbootin

Download and run UNetbootin, then supply it with the appropriate ISO (CD image) file, floppy/hard disk image, or kernel and initrd files when prompted (see screenshot). Check your distribution's download page to find the appropriate file; if in doubt use the ISO file"

So would it work for windows 7 iso file? And what exactly do you mean I am a little of the support map?

Sadly.

You must try this to see if it works.

By off the support map, Microsoft and almost all support sites will wash their hands. Here I'll note a possible solution and wish you good luck,

This only shows numerous versions of Linux I will try though! Thank You!

Actually it doesn't.

I noted where you use this to point at your .ISO.

When you move off the supported paths you learn to create and use the other tools to your advantage.

Let's see if you can get it done.

It is currently extracting and copying files to my hard drive right now. Hopefully when I restart it will actually load the files and install! I can only hope! lol

Got it!

I actually had a corrupt file out of the bunch so all that I needed to do was re download it. So I didn't even need the hard drive I just opened setup and upgraded, but thank you much for helping!

Thanks for the question.

It refreshed my memory about this app. And about the bad .ISO. Let me dis on download accelerators here. I find those often cause download corruption.

Glad it's working!
