This is a very common occurrence in Dell computers. I have personally installed a 2nd drive as the primary slave device, jumpered correctly, and when booted the system, got a "No OS found" error. Well I called Dell just to make sure I wasn't losing my mind. I had a senior technician tell me to go into the bios, and on the main screen make sure that the Num Lock, Scroll Lock, and Cap Lock lights were all on, then press Alt-E, Alt-F, and Esc/F10 to exit and save changes. What this strange key combinations does for you is flush the hardware configuration that the Dell has stored somewhere and makes it look at everything all over again. The first time you boot will be a lot slower but it will boot just fine that time and every other time after that. Well at least until you change your hardware config again, then you will have to do the above all over again. Hope this helps.
I would like to install a 2nd hd in my dell dimension 4300. I have three different drives: a 40 GB Western Digital IDE drive, a 60 GB IBM IDE, and a Maxtor 60GB ATA/133.
I tried the 40GB and my computer would not boot up.
I tried the IBM and it said the device was corrupted.
And Im wondering, if my computer says it uses IDE, is there any way to use the Maxtor?
Either way, I need help getting some storage space, and any info would be great.
And when my roommate installed his HD he moved my HD to the area where the A:/ Sat. When he took his out he left it there and set the CD Drive as the slave to my HD. When I move to use the double cable on the two drives, my cd drive is no longer recognized. and with the way it is set up now, when I boot a prompt comes up saying cannot locate secondary/primary drive 0, press F1 to Cont.
