Problems Defraging Windows 98SE

Feb 5, 2004 11:47PM PST

Hi Folks:
I am having difficulty getting my Win 98SE to defrag.
I run the Disc Cleanup first then the Defragmenter.
The Defragmenter starts and runs but does not move beyond 5% or 10% defrag.
Any suggestions to correct this problem?

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,

Phate

Your defrag keeps restarting bcause you have some program like antivirus running in the background..try starting your computer in safe mode then run defrag...
Hope this helps you

I exit from McAfee to eliminate this problem, then re-boot when defrag is done.

Close all open applications. It is clear that your system is highly fragmented from not running it often enough. The reason it seems to get stuck on 5% is that the Windows defrag program uses your ram to store the files that it is currently rearranging. When ram is full it needs to restart. Try not doing a full defrag. Try files only. Then do a full defrag. As your disc appears highly fragmented do these over night. Then set your maintence wizard to run at least once a night. Or buy a third party defrager like diskeeper.

As you have been already instructed close all back-ground running applications, then go to this site and down load this free version of Disk Keeper lite. This is a fast defrag program, much faster then OEM version. It has some (ugh) ad's, but ignore and run. Will fix your system more efficiently if run regularly.

It sounds like something is writing to your HD so it has to keep starting over. Try closing all applications that are running. Start with your Virus program

Use multiple ctl-alt-del keystrokes to bring up an end task manager, then highlight devices one at a time, and end their tasks, with the exception of explorer, and systray (those are required to be open), once you end all running tasks, try running your defragmenter, I would also recommend running scandisk before defragmentation. It should perform the process.

I would just like to add a comment regarding the use of the Diskeeper product. I had the same problem. I downloaded the trial version and bought the product when the trial period was over.
The program has a 'Set and Forget' feature that routinely defrags my computer. Great investment and so easy to use, best part, defragging is not a problem anymore. Good Luck!

Hello

You must first running the scandisk with intensive status. After running of scandisk, now can starting defragmenter. Need the programs of Microsoft.

Have a nice Day
