a quite old iMac with an early version of OS X installed,
an old iMac with a slightly later version of OS X installed
or what?
Lack of details do not help but, if this thing is running OSX, you can reset the passwords by booting the machine from the Restoration CD/DVD that came with it or with any, older, retail version of OS X .
The message you got at first was probably indicating that the date and time were incorrect because the internal battery was dead.

I have received my mums old I mac computer. I turned it on and a message said something like it hasn't been used since 2001 or something similar . I got into it but when I logged off u realised I couldn't get back in without a password . My brother does
Not have a clue what it could be nor my mum. I turned the mac off and on again and automatically logged me in to my brothers but I would like to make my own user name account etc and change password but cannot do this without the original password. Is there any way I can restart the computer completely ? Please help Thankyou !!!!
