Problems between MSWorks and MSOffice

May 15, 2005 1:12AM PDT

Hi All- I purchased a reforbished Emachines 3256 that came installed with microsoft works. I create documents in this format, I even save them as .doc files but they are unreadable by my office machine which is loaded with Microsoft office (this was a real issue the day I completed my final to be printed off at the office). why is this? I either get a dialog box indicating that MS Office cant read the file or a dialog box asking me which program I want to use to open this. I've tried opening in wordpad but all I get is characters. I would have thought that this would be almost transparent. I appreciate any help that anyone can offer.

Yes. Works and Word are often problematic.

There are no plans to fix this. However, you could load Open Office at home, copy and paste that document into Open Office, save as a Word document and get much better results.

The price is free and you can download it at http://www.openoffice.org

I downloaded easy office. Is it the same thing? I originally downloaded this to address the outlook vs. outlook express issue on my new machine. Is open office a better choice? Can it addres both this issue and the contact issue (cant open my contacts in the new machine when I try to sync my pda).

You also might want to try the Works to Word converter

Try this...

...if all you want is to print the document. If you have Wordpad at your E-machine, then copy and paste your Works document to it. With that on floopy or CD, you can then open it with Wordpad at the office and print. Some formatting may be lost. I do not have Works, but can you save Works documents with the rtf format ?
