Problem with XP - access suddenly denied to certain programs

by Wheels / February 27, 2005 2:06 AM PST

I was online about a week ago and suddenly I get a warning that my anti-virus software was turned off. I fished around a bit (not terribly computer savvy,so I didn't mess with much) and didn't find anything. I shut down and started up again and found I couldn't access the internet through MSN, although I could with internet explorer. Once on explorer, I went to the Symatec homepage to do a live update. Page came up and I could navigate through it, but the live update failed. Went to the Microsoft webpage, tried to run updates - wouldn't allow that either. Tried to access my Hotmail account and Messenger, no luck. I have a Dell 8600 connected to a cable modem.

Any ideas what's wrong?

MSN is it's own world of issues and they have their own support staff. They have not shared their support knowledge base so you get to call them.

Hotmail issues are well known and I just install Firefox to see if that works and if it does I will declare your machine has suffered SPYWARE damage.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
