1/ download Ad-Aware SE from 2/Do you get any error messages.?
3/ Try logging into the administrators account instead of yours - press ctl-alt-del TWICE when faced with the login screen.
4/Investigate msconfig - stop things running in the startup folder as one of then might be startup items maybe causing the problems - also stop non windows services from loading in the services folder.
5/Look in the "event viewer" for any errors - if you are not logging turn on logging then reboot.

phynom, For the missing taskbar & start button go to the link below and scroll down to line 117 left column and download the ''Restore Taskbar and Start Menu'' .reg file. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

For the icon problem, right click your desktop>arrange icons by>and checkmark Show desktop icons.
