Problem with Win 98 computer/won't keep settings

by mej / August 8, 2005 2:13 AM PDT

I run Win 98 with SBCYahoo DSL, have 128 RAM, 13GBwith 8.5 left. Last week I had a virus and several spywares caused by a web search. It installed 6 programs and about 35 files. I cleaned with McAfee, Bitdefender online, REgistry mechanic, Spybot S&D, AdAware SE. Also had to go to mypctuneup.com to get rid of ABI program that was installed (deleted the uninstall program). Everything seemed to be working better, faster speed, connection to internet working faster, etc. All of a sudden I started having problems with installed programs, namely WAVELab (stuttering upon recording). Found that everytime I reboot (with 98 a given of course) I lose my sound settings. Also the system is terribly slow and sluggish. I again ran McAfee, BitDefender, spybot, Adaware and REgistry Mechanic and found no problems.

What do I do now? I think the system was messed up with that virus (frankly I'm not sure its all gone --it was a Trojan) and I keep losing my settings on Ensonique. I'm at a loss. Please help. Thank you.

re ur problem

Unfortunately you cant never really tell how much damage has been done until you want to use something.
Also just because your anti-virus programs etc has not found anything doesnt mean its clean.
They can only protect you from the ones they know about.
Do you run a firewall?
Do you run your own anti-virus program on your own computer?
Is your computer fully upto date,windows,anti-virus etc?
Do you run anti-spyware?
If not your way behind the 8 ball.
These are basic must haves.
When in doubt reformat.
But unless you get these basic things you will be reformatting all the time.
Dont download dodgy programs from dodgy sites, either.
Trojans and viruses made, that anti-viruses cant pick up are born everyday and can be easy hidden in a program you download.
Goodluck !

In my security settings is a trusted site of *.0.0.0.0 I try to remove it, it shows I have but it returns upon reboot. By the way I do not run a firewall because my system is too small to do so. Also everything is up to date including virus protection, spy detection, windows update, etc.

How do I get rid of the *0.0.0.0 website? Thanks

The 0.0.0.0. thing

Sounds like a loopback for a host file.

I don't use reg mech so can't comment.

SS+D does have some features like tea timer/host/immunity.

I don't use any of those features so I can't comment about what they do.

Perhaps if you were to turn off these progs/features one at a time you might find the culprit that puts 0.0.0.0. in the trusted zone.
