Problem with warcraft 3 and direct x

Feb 2, 2005 1:18PM PST

Ok, its a friends pc and looking for other ideas. The young fella virused his pc out, so I rolled it back using ghost, and ever since, warcraft 3 on loading, comes up with a directx error, ie must have version 8. whatever installed.

He has Windows 2000 and an old tnt2 vid card. No hardware changes have occured.
Ive reinstalled Warcraft 3.
Ive reinstalled latest version of directx
Ive updated the nvidia drivers.

Still get a screen freeze or a direct x error message every time he tries to start the game.
Have thought about trying to demove directx from the registry and reinstalling, but thought it might lead to system failure upon removal.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Direct X

Assumed you looked and ran dxdiag tests (Start>Run>type in dxdiag>click OK) which shows what version of Direct X is in computer. Warcraft III requires DirectX 8.1, minimun of 400MHz processor, and 128MB RAM. The Nvidia TNT 2 card should work fine with that game. I have used that card before.

As I may or may not have said, it used to play warcraft 3 fine before I reimaged it.....but since it was reimaged, no joy. Diablo 2 still works, as do a number of other games he plays, just no warcraft3. Yep, has Directx 9 installed.

Any other ideas?

Hmmm.......

Uninstall, if it's not a pirated CD or download, then while off the net, close down programs (not Explorer or System Tray) running in the background at start up including AntiVirus, Firewall, and Screensavers, then reinstall the game. Reboot, the repeat the close downs and see if it will play while all those programs are shut down. Don't forget to reboot to reinstall the programs & anti-virus/firewall, etc..

You mentioned he had a lot of virus problems. Maybe not fully eliminated for that and/or Spyware. Youngsters like to use P2P and kaaza which will give problems in that regards.
Some free online checks:

A free AntiVirus program if he doesn't have, that does a good job with auto download of definitions updates.

Some free Spyware he can install
Adaware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Spybot: http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10289035.html

A free firewall if he doesn't have.

Just reread your original post.....I answered above without reading or remembering.....you did a ghost reimaging. Something in his game just didn't transfer.
He would have to use the original CD to reinstall, or the legal/illegal over the net if he got it thataway.
