Question

Problem with Video Card / Dual Monitors

Aug 16, 2013 8:07AM PDT

So I recently purchased a gaming desktop from my friend and set it up with two Acer S201HL monitors connected to the computer with DVI cables. The monitors are plugged into a EVGA GeForce GTX 660 graphics card.

This morning, I restarted my computer after it froze. Up to this point, the dual monitor display I had worked very well. However, as soon as I restarted my computer, the monitor plugged into the bottom port of the card started to register a "No Signal" message and went black. I switched the monitor slots and the monitors switched which one worked and which one did not, so it was not a loose connection or monitor problem. I then proceeded to completely uninstall the Nvididia drivers and reinstalled them. This did not fix the problem and I am now at a loss for what to do. If anyone had some suggestions on how to fix this issue, it would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
So it's a dead port on the card?

Did you try anther video card?

No other card

I don't have another video card to try with the comp. Also, I had thought of that, but it didn't seem to make sense that it would only not work when I had rebooted my computer.

Sorry but I read that again

And can't find where it started to work again. That freeze could have been caused by the video card dieing a little. But I'll go with that. That is, what makes it work again? It wasn't clear.

Nothing

I think we are not on the same page. The second screen at no point started to work again. I just thought it was odd that it only stopped working when I rebooted the computer, not just at a random time if the card had died. The freezing issue had been happening for several days and still is. It has a tendency to freeze up at random times when streaming video from twitch.tv.

To me that's a sign the video card had issues.

Now it has more issues. Most of this cards have a warranty so check into that.

In parting I often try the display on the one lone port as a test as well as booting up Ubuntu Live (no install required.)

What do you mean?

What do you mean by your last comment? Also, thanks for the help. I may look into buying a new video card then.

I made a few comments. But the very last one is

The last one about Ubuntu Live is a google away. I boot up those Live OS from CD/DVD since I want a way to test the hardware without installing or touching the client's OS.

Here's an old note about it and then a link to Ubuntu Live (which I used google to find.)

1. Dated note -> http://tips.oncomputers.info/archives2004/0401/2004-Jan-11.htm

This is a very old and from what I can tell a secret method to test hardware, save user files without touching the user's OS and files.

2. Not so dated -> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/try-ubuntu-before-you-install

Drivers don't wear out.

But if you read prior discussions there is a procedure I'll get into later after we know the ports work in another Live OS.

Answer
Well, I guess the first question for me to ask....
Aug 25, 2013 1:43PM PDT

...is, what Operating System are you using? I assume you are using Windows, but it might be good to start.

Once in there, the question to check is to see if the second monitor is activated in the display control panel. Extend the desktop to it and see if it will turn on.

and it is not active anywhere. The computer does not detect it.
