Question

Problem with TV getting antenna signal

Sep 8, 2017 10:32AM PDT

I've had a Mohu Sky 60 antenna since 2013 but never hooked it up. Working on it now & was able to get some channels with it on small TV but when I connect it the same way to 50" Panasonic TV (TC-P50C2) I get no channels. Doesn't matter where I move the antenna, 0 channels. Yes, when I move antenna, I rescan. Help!!!

Could be sad news.

Did you try both "Cable" or "Antenna" in the ANT In box?

Also, if this fails you can research external tuners. You see these on Amazon and maybe in Wlamart stores.

tried didn't help

I scanned on cable & same results. I was afraid I'd need a tuner. Thanks!

did that, lots of channels

Did that, says we could get as many as 68 channels.

I do not understand why with a little TV sitting next to the big one, I can connect the antenna to the little one, get 30+ channels on it, disconnect it and connect same thing to the big TV the same exact way and get 0 channels on the big TV. I rescan every time I move the antenna to a different device and rescan when I move the antenna itself.

We've got a Roku device (not TV, Roku 3) and I'm looking into a tuner that will let us access OTA channels through Roku. Didn't want to have to spend more money, though.

That's why I think the tuner is long gone.

yep, guessing you are right

I'll go ahead and update the firmware but looks like I'll be looking for a tuner.

Thanks all.

Seems you were correct

I even checked to make sure that TV wasn't some old analog version. Sometimes people keep scanning for channels on the cable setting however instead of doing for the OTA channels, and then "need" a tuner which can be used on an INPUT.

While the symptoms don't exactly match

you didn't say whether this was an amplified antenna. If you are just a few miles from the towers with 60+ channels are available, you don't need an amplified antenna as these can overdrive the tuner. If you know you are in a strong signal area, you can try a simple loop type or even a rabbit ears type and test the TV for its ability to pick up anything at all. If still no-go, the bad tuner diagnosis seems reasonable.

Mohu Sky 60 antenna

Yep, it's amplified. I suspect if we put it on the roof we'd get more than 35 or so channels but to be honest, we're really only looking to get our local affiliates of ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS. Our viewing habits changed when we started streaming shows & we watch Hulu or Amazon Prime in the evenings through. In the morning, we'd like to watch local TV. We have Comcast cable TV but we're dropping them, changing Internet to AT&T fiber with no TV channels in a month.

Is there any way to mirror what's on the little TV with OTA channels onto the big TV? The little TV has HDMI out and we do have a receiver I can run it into. I was hoping that I'd find a way to connect the HDMI cable from the little TV to the big TV but that won't work.

No TV I've seen has HDMI output.

I have seen some with HDMI ARC but that's just audio. When you need folk to check into that, add full model numbers or better yet a link to the TV product page.

What input is set on the TV?
Sep 8, 2017 2:21PM PDT

I doubt it's automatic switching, so did you set the TV settings to use the RF/antenna as the signal input? Was the TV previously set to some other signal input?

Answer
solved it

FYI, I remembered I had an old Tivo Premiere box so I hooked it up to the TV and the antenna. I was able to use it as a tuner for the Tivo! Actually, I hooked it up to the receiver for the TV and it works well. I can't record anything OTA since i no longer have a Tivo subscription but at least we can watch some of the OTA channels.

thanks for everyone's help.

Always nice to find a workaround using what you have in the closet.
