Question

problem with touch pad, playing WOT

Jan 24, 2013 1:30AM PST

My experience has not been as bad as many others on this board, but still... I have a Dell 15, 3521. It has Win 8 and and intel HD4000 graphics. I play World of Tanks. In WOT, you steer the tank with the keyboard, but you move you view, and aim your cannon, with the mouse, or in my case, the touch pad. Steering with the keys always works. But there is a problem when trying to aim with the touch pad. When I am steering the tank with the keys, I cannot turn my viewpoint, or aim, with the touch pad. As soon as I stop steering with a key, I can turn my viewpoint and aim. This is a bad problem when playing WOT. When I played on my 8 year old HP, also with a touch pad, this was not a problem. Other than this problem, the game plays great on the Dell. The HP was woefully under powered for the game. Maybe some little setting I do not know about? Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Answer
Touchpad settings
Jan 24, 2013 7:39PM PST

Hi,

Ensure that the touchpad driver is updated.

1. Click the touchpad icon in the system tray.
2. Click 'Touchpad Properties', this dialog box enables you to configure Sensitivity settings, Button settings, Scrolling and Zoom Settings etc.
3. Ensure that 'Palm Rejection' is disabled; the 'Turn On' box should not be checked. Here is an image for your reference.

Hope this helps.
Please revert for any clarification.

for answering my question Manpreet. My drivers are up to date, got the computer for Christmas. Also set the "Palm Rejection" setting off. Unfortunately the problem has persisted. My next idea is to hook in an external mouse and see if that makes any difference. Appreciate the help. Anyone with any other ideas please do write.

Thanks for the response.
I am sure that you clicked 'Save' after disabling 'Palm Rejection'.
I also wanted to check if you are able to turn the viewpoint and aim using an external mouse while steering with the keyboard?

Keep me posted with the status.

So I look like an *******. Apparently, I had not clicked on save the first time. Now that I did, the touch pad is working better. It still is not perfect, sometimes it will not move, and has the letter "q" paired with both the + and - symbols. This seems to be a different problem however. Now I can turn the tank and my view at the same time. Thanks again for the help Manpreet, I can play now. Sorry for the mistake I made earlier.

I am glad that you are able to turn the viewpoint and aim using the touchpad.
Could you please share instances when the touchpad does not work. Also, please elaborate the issue about the letter 'q' paired with '+' and '-' symbols.

Thanks and Regards,
Manpreet C

Thank you again for keeping up with me and my problem Manpreet. Unfortunately, I seem to have now lost my hard drive on my less then two month old Dell. My computer will start, but does not see the hard drive. I am not 10 percent computer literate enough to mess with something like that, so it seems I will have to send it back. It has to be under warranty. I have read some other peoples stories of the difficulties they have had when dealing with major problems, really hope that does not happen with me. I have an 855 number that I will call, probably on Monday, to begin the process. Any advice for dealing with the Dell people would be appreciated. Thanks again for your help Manpreet. Really want to get the Dell back when fixed. Have a great one, bye, Andrew.

Hard drive diagnostics.
Feb 8, 2013 1:39AM PST

Thanks for the response.

Did you receive any error pertaining to hard drive failure?
Please run Dell diagnostics to check the hardware functionality:
1. Restart PC and press F12 key at Dell Splash screen.
2. Select 'Diagnostics'.
3. Please share the error code(s) if any.

You can also check if the hard drive is detected in BIOS:
1. Restart PC and press F2 key at Dell Splash screen.
2. Check if the hard drive model is displayed across 'Fixed HDD' as shown in the image.
You can send the service tag by sending an email to my CNET profile. Here is the link to locate the service tag on the laptop: http://dell.to/WTVqST.

Please try these steps and share the results. I would be glad to assist you.

Thanks and Regards,

The info....
Feb 9, 2013 3:32AM PST

I have found the information you wanted me to look for. When I turn the computer on, taking no action at the splash screen, I get "Checking media: Fail" twice, and "press any key to reboot". Which just gets me back to the first message. When hitting F2 at the splash, I get the screen you showed in your e-mail. But, in the "Fixed HDD" line, I get "[Not detected]". And when hitting F12 at the splash, and proceeding through diagnostics I get to "Hard drive-not installed". Going one step farther, to "event" I think, I get "Fail PSA V4222", and "Hard drive- Not detected", and "Error 2000:0155". It is all Klingon to me, no idea what any of it means. Is this the correct information? Does it help? Thanks again Manpreet. Hope your weekend is going great.

I was selfishly hoping to hear back from you today Manpreet. Unless you have some further advice for me, then I am going to get in touch with Dell on Tuesday the 12th. I will be able to relay more info to them thanks to your instructions on what to look up, and how to do it, on my laptop. Thanks for the help, and if there is anything more I should know or do, please write back asap.
