Problem with "restart" since installing SP2

by MichaelI / November 30, 2004 2:14 AM PST

Hi, folks...

Wonder if anybody can help with this one. I have an HP Pavilion a550e. Bought it about 4 months ago--just before systems came with XP SP2 preloaded. It worked aboslutely fine before I installed SP2. It still does since I installed SP2--with one weird little exception. It does NOT like the "restart" option. I have to turn it off completely and power up from scratch. If I try to use the "restart" option (or if I'm installing something new or upgrading something already on my system and am prompted to restart), it shuts down Windows, but then won't come back up again. And the only way to get it to come back to life is to unplug it, plug it back in, and power up.

Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks!

We have been seeing the same problem with anything from hp notebooks to Gateway mini-towers. Being a VAR it is difficult to tell a client, "Just unplug the computer and wait several minutes every time you want to restart it." Meanwhile a search of the microsoft knowledge base shows nary a word of recognition. Perhaps all the techies are busy fishing Billy's indoor trout stream.

I find out how to fix the restart problem after install SP2
by Azure CHENG / March 15, 2005 4:33 AM PST

I using more then a week and call HP and Microsoft to try to find out how to fix it. But end up I find it out by myself and you will laugh after know how to fix it.

Goto Control Panel, Power Options, change the power schemes from Energy Star to Home/Office Desk.

Now you can reboot as much as you want. So you can keep using Energy Star until you want to restart then change the power schemes.

I already email to HP and Microsoft Support about this issue and hope they will try to fix it.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
