Question

Problem with RAID Rebuild in VICON CCTV Storage

Nov 12, 2014 1:46PM PST

We are using VICON NVR shadow for our CCTV systems which is 24bay * 4TB WD RED SATA HDD each.the said system configured with RAID 5 and after configuring cameras [36Nos] and recording one HDD failed and RAID has been degraded since its hot swap we installed new HDD[Same type/Partno] its starts rebuilding automatically but rebuild failed with a reason of HDD failure.when we check the log it shows CRC errors.Again we replaced with another NEW HDD still it shows the same issues.as per manufacture[VICON] inititally its raid firmware[raid controller having latest firmware] issues then they said we have to stop the recording process inorder to make the rebuild successful which is not convincing and its not possible to stop the recording .in this NVR the RAID controller is LSI megaRAID SAS 9288-24i4e.Any one please help by giving a technical advise. We have replaced hdd's in other same type NVR's with out any issue.

If the box is malfunctioning that badly I'd call up VICON and see what they say to do next. Sometimes the box has to be swapped out.

VICON Reply !! not seems to be logical

"The CRC or Cyclic Redundancy Check failure is due the excessive processing needed to continue to record to the raid while trying to rebuild the database following a drive replacement. This is due to the size of the raid and can only be overcome if recording is stopped while the raid database is being rebuilt. "

If you can't stop the recording, it seems a catch-22, if they don't come up with an answer you like more. Then it's time to buy another device.
