Problem with programs

Hi, something weird and annoying happened today on my computer. It all started when i was trying to uninstall my wireless WLAN adapter (WL-167G USB2.0 WLAN ADAPTER). When i completed my installation, i realized that most of my icons on my desktop were gone!.. Also when i clicked on the windows start button and clicked programs, A LOT of my file folders were "missing", such as my system tools, Interactual player, Norton anti virus and games folder(games like the ones included with windows, ex. pinball, checkers, solitaire etc.)..and MORE were all empty!! I don't understand how this happened. ALl i did was uninstall a program and then POOF all gone.. however the files are still there in the computer, im pretty sure. So i was just wondering how would i fix this? Do i have to reinstall windows?..i really would rather not..

ALSO a side note. Maybe these side notes will help..

I just got this computer, built it from scratch, also the windows xp that im using isn't validated yet (i didnt put the product code in yet)

Re: shortcuts gone

In reply to: Problem with programs

In all profiles (that's Documents and Settings, one for each user, and a common one in All Users) are two folders: Desktop and Menu Start. If you log on you see your own shortcuts + the shortcuts from All Users.

Either you are logging on in the wrong profile, so you don't see your 'own' shortcuts, or shortcuts have disappeared from All Users, or - somehow - they still are present but aren't shown.

My Computer or Windows Explorer will tell you. And it won't harm to validate XP, of course.

In the start menu ...

In reply to: files gone?

are just shortcuts, like on (most peoples) desktop.

As we can't see your machine, it's up to you to find out what you're missing and tell us. It doesn't make much sense to ask us.

Once you know what you're missing (and checked it isn't in the recycle bin) you'll have to find out a way to add it again.
