Problem with profil-account of XP

Nov 24, 2004 9:50AM PST

I have 2 profils for 2 users in a pc. For some reason that I do not know, Windows XP do not open the 1st one and they have deleted suddenly all the files from My Documents! From the other user's profil I can not find anything but in the c drive I can see that the capasity is the same as before...
What can I do for back up my files???

Have you looked in the C Drive | Documents and Settings?

You might see that user profile and be able to access the files and copy them over to the other user profile.

I have already search not only to Documents and Settings but also everywhere else to the C Drive. I forgot to mention that the user profil that I'm try to open it opens now with new profil settings that the pc itself has choose deleting all the shorcut of the programs and of course all the files. I can't find anything from both profils. But as I said before the capacity of the disc remains the same as before.

Did you turn on "Show hidden files and folders" in Folder Options?
Perhaps they could be hidden.

Or maybe System Restore might reset it to the previous setup?

Or you may have to try a data recovery software like GetDataBack which can recover deleted files.

First thank you very much for helping me. I have already did "show hidden files" but there're nowhere the files and also I have tried to recovery the lost data but nothing again. I am thinking to delete this profile that the pc has made instead of the 1st one and try to create a new one hoping that it will asked me what I will like to do with the files of the profile. The computer isn't mine and I am afraid to do that... What do you think? Thank you again for your replies!

Normally when a user profile is being deleted XP will pop up a message asking you if you also want to delete the files in MY Documents for that profile or save it.

If what has happened here is that the first user profile is somehow deleted together with the files then they are probably gone.

Just a hunch have you checked the Recycle Bin to see if the files are there? I doubt it but worth a try.

Have you tried System Restore back to before this happen as I suggested earlier?

Did that also. I have now deleted the profile, save the files as he asked me but still nothing. The stravge thing is that the hard disc capacity shows that nothing has been deleted and the back up program has shown by what my friend says some older files that he has deleted himself and not the ones that we are looking for. We are talking about 10Gb files lost, that the properties of the c drive says that they are still there...

You can try and scan with GetDataBack and see if it'll recover the lost data.
Here is the link:
http://www.runtime.org/gdb.htm

If it works you'll have to save the data to another HDD so you'll need to attach a second HDD to the PC.

correction...

To use GetDataBack you have to install the Program on another PC and attach your HDD to is.
Then if you find your lost data save them to the host PC.
You are not supposed to install GetDataBack on the PC with the lost data.

I've used this program a few times and managed to recover data that was lost from fdisk and format.

But sometimes the data recovered may be corrupt due to being over written.

Good luck.

OK NOW I understand where the problem was. I had run the program to the pc that has the problem. Thank you very much for your help. Do not hesitate, if I can do something for you.
