Problem with onboard sound. Albatron mobo, Win XP Pro.

Sep 3, 2004 2:53AM PDT

Hello all,

My sound quit working. I have tried many things to correct for this and none seem to work.

When I check in multimedia and sound it shows no audio device hooked up.

I have reinstalled the latest drivers from mobo manufacturer.

I have disabled and re-enabled on board sound.

I inserted original xp disk and ran sfc /scannow.

The only other thing I can think of before doing a re-format re-load is to do a Windows repair with the original XP disk.

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

AJ

There is an issue with XP in that...

1. Microsoft doesn't supply drivers.
2. If you took a Windows Update driver, you may have to find how to remove it.
3. XP and SP2 seems to change the speakers settings and some don't know to be sure to check all the mixer controls.

In closing, that's software. If I need to test the hardware I boot up a KNOPPIX CD and see if that works.

Thanks BOB,

I will try KNOPPIX. Do you know where I can get a copy? I have opted to skip the SP2 for a while... until M$ fixes it... LOL

KNOPPIX is a free download from far too many places. When I need a new copy, I type KNOPPIX into google.com and go get it.

As to SP2, some 50 plus machines at the office and zero issues. I seem to have missed what issues there are. Kinda sad since I love to dig into such things.

BOB,

I found a mirror to d/l KNOPPIX. Is it usually 716 MB or so?

I would like to find a zipped version of the ISO if possible.

Even at 1.5 MB/s d/l speed that is a lot.

I agree, it is funn to dig into the problems that arise with issues from installing M$ patches/fixes/bugs... LOL, but I don't have the luxury to do this most of the time.

Even if the bug is useful, you still can't call it a feature... LOL.

Bob,

I found a link to KNOPPIX on another one of your posts, thank you.

Can you give me a brief description of what I might need to do to use the KNOPPIX or send me a link please.

Your help is very appreciated.

I use KNOPPIX to test a machine in many ways and to drag files out. I make the CD from the ISO and boot it.

It supports a lot of hardware and to see if sound works you try playing a MP3 or sound.

Bob,

Thanks for all of your help...

I found an article from Knocking Around in Knoppix that you wrote in that explains a lot of what i need to know.

When I get home I will try this out and post back with my results.

I fear a dreaded re-format/re-load of M$ winXP though...
