Problem with NVidea 8400GS graphic card.

I?ve been playing World of Warcraft on and off for 3+ years. The game has always run smooth without issues until recently. Now when playing the frame rate only seems to go as high as 25 which is playable and will frequently drop to between 7 ? 10 and is totally not playable. This fluxuation in the frame rate happens often. When it drops down to 7 ? 10 it usually last a few minutes and go back up to 20 ? 25 for a few minutes and drop back down again. When the game was playing well, the frame rate would get as high as 50 ? 60. This is very frustrating. My PC is an HP m9040n.

That's a well known problem.

The 8400 is a problem chip. If you are serious you would research then learn to replace it.

I opened up the case and cleaned out all the dust. The fan on the GPU doesn't appear to be functioning. I have a fan speed monitor. The temp on the GPU right now is 228F. I'd say that is rather HOT.

Ok...at least you know what the problem is.

Now it's simply a matter of replacing the HS Fan on the GPU (and there are aftermarket kits for that) or better yet, put the $$ toward a new GPU that functions within the limits of your existing system ...especially the PSU.

If that temp (228F) is accurate..I'd hesitate to even use the PC until you get another GPU.

Let us know how it turns out.

New GPU installed

In reply to: Ok...at least you know what the problem is.

I installed an NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT. A small upgrade from what I had. Choices are limited without installing a better power supply. So far so good.
