Problem with Network Storage

Jul 17, 2006 11:03PM PDT

Hi,

I got myself a V-Gear LANDISK, a device which allows a ATA HDD to be attached to it and files to be accessed via the local network. The HDD which is attached to it, is a Maxtor 250GB HDD which is formatted as FAT32 by the unit. The unit is using SMB for LAN and FTP for WAN.

My computer's OS is using XP Professional and Home and all Hard disks are formated as NTFS.

The problem is as follows:

1. Copying all kinds of files from my local computer to my network HDD looks ok. But if a JPEG file is copied down from Network HDD to PC HDD, the file gets corrupted (about 90% of the total copied down get corrupted). It will show colored lines across the bottom of the copied version or half the picture is missing (if that happens windows picture and fax viewer will show an error: "Drawing Failed". This is true if I copy a lot of JPEG at one time (maybe like 1 folder full of JPEGs). Thus at the moment I will need to drag and drop a few JPEG at a time which is time consuming and also no guarantees that it won?t be corrupted (when too many are dragged).

2. Also when any file is already on the network HDD and when I need to replace the file, the file will be deleted instead of replaced even though windows ask if it is ok to replace it. Thus I need to issue the copy command on the file twice.

This problem happens to any computer connected up to the network drive. If i should remove this HDD and connect it up, all the files are intact and copying them out via USB connection / IDE are ok. Did a scandisk on this network HDD and there are no errors on it.

Has anyone faced this problem or have any ideas to solve it? Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks!!

1. It's too hot in that case. I left the back panel off and my errors diminished to none.

2. The firmware as shipped was out of date. I don't see you mentioning you have the latest.

3. DANGER. I read you pulled the drive and connected it to some USB adapter. After that you may find the box to not work proper with the drive. Sorry, I only know of the issue and no cure.

Hope this helps.

Hello and thanks for your reply.

1. I agree that it is too hot when it is copying loads of data. Just curious, what were the errors you faced?

2. I have checked my firmware and it is the lastest as seen on their website.

3. I reformated again the HDD again using the box's reformat function after fixing it to a USB adapter, thus it is a fresh clean HDD. So far it works as it should.

Sorry, I will not list the errors. Too many. Leaving the rear cover off entirely is my short term cure till I have time to take the case down to the shop to drill a series of big holes which I will then apply some mesh material I have to tidy it up.

Sorry to hear you want to hear the list of errors. I feel as if you'll miss out of a fellow owner's quick cure for the heat.
