Question

Problem with network file sharing

Oct 18, 2013 9:14AM PDT

My D-Link router failed, so I'm trying to use my ATT U-verse modem which is supposed to have a built-in wireless router, at least until I can buy a new stand-alone router. My main problem is that network file sharing has stopped working. I can't even see shared folders in My Network Places on the same computer. I'm using Windows XP on a desktop and two notebooks. Any help appreciated.

More info about my problem

I was a happy camper, everything working with a D-Link DIR-601 router. It's WAN port was connected to the ATT Uverse modem/router. That was all that was connected to the Uverse, and its wireless function was turned off. After the D-Link failed, I tried connecting my PC directly to port 1 of the Uverse unit, and three other direct-wired devices to the other 3 ethernet ports. The Uverse is a Pace Plc Model 3801HGV. It appears the devices connected to the other 3 ports aren't working, although the router logs show some activity. It looks like the wireless is setup ok, as it can see other wireless devices.

I've turned off as much of the router firewall as it will allow. The main PC is designated as a DMZ and the router's DMZ Plus feature is turned on which is supposed to allow all applications to get through. Under advanced configuration, I've turned off all the enhanced security, and allowing all the inbound and outbound protocols.

On the PC, I've turned off the Windows firewall, and tried temporarily turning off the Eset security suite firewall.

But on other network devices, I don't see my shared folders. Strangely, If I run Vuze on my PC, it shows up on one device, but shared files do not. Also shared files even from the same PC are not showing up in My Network Places.

I'm willing to try any suggestions. I've ordered a new stand-alone wireless router, but it will take a few days to arrive. Meantime I can only share files via "sneakernet" with a USB thumb drive.

Good luck.

Since the other 3 ports don't work it's either a dead router/modem or you configured it as a bridge.
