Problem with my router

May 21, 2008 8:39AM PDT

About a month ago I bought an Ativa G-Wirless Router, and mostly of the time it work fine, but somtimes, it stop receiving packets, but sending packets. I have the options checked in "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". I belive, since that is what Live Messenger tell me, is than the problems are Host, DNS and Key Ports. What can I do?

Set it up using defaults. . .

Enable WPA, and to show SSID.

Next, on the PC, open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig /release

Then:

ipconfig /renew

I'm assuming you're using XP since you didn't say. Vista or W98 may be different.

Thanks, but...

Sorry, I should made my problem more clear. I'm not using Wi-Fi, I bought the router with G capabilities just in case I get later on a laptop, but is just for two desktops vie ethernet cables and in both of my desktops I get that problem.

And I do the ipconfig/release and ipconfi/renew, and still, the problem isn't solved.

Just to make sure. Disable the radio for now.

Also, if cable modem, don't forget to cycle power on that after you move the cable from PC to the router.

Sorry, English isn't my first language, so I don't understand what you mean by cycle power.

And yes, it is cable modem. It is directly conected to my router and then, from the router to two diffrentes desktops.

P.S. I'm using Windows XP Home Edition.

Well...

The only thing I didn't understand was "Cycle Power" and if you mean by cycle power to turn off everything and turning on again, that works sometimes, but not always, and the problem keep coming back. Any other suggestion?

Tried updating the firmware?
May 23, 2008 7:24AM PDT

I've heard that is a common problem with Ativa routers, and while some have benefited from updating their firmware (download the *beta* update), the only other solution is to turn the router off and back on (indeed what Bob meant by "cycle power") again. Unfortunately that is often the hidden cost of lower-priced, off-branded routers.
