The PC is 4 years old, operating system is XP (service pack 3). I tried reinstalling the drive but no effect. The drive is NEC DVD_RW ND-6750A

I'll try a CD/DVD lens cleaner and re-test. After that I'll try a new drive.

When did you last Flash a newer version of a Bios for

this machine? Get to know its brand and model first. Go onto the official web-site of such branded machine and by using its support page, Download all Drivers for it + Bios file.

Flash the Bios then, install newest drivers for it.

While your at it, might as well jump to your newest electronics store for acquiring an O.S. upgrade package of Windows 7 Home Premium Edition x86(32bit).

Do more 'Windows Update' featured web connection to Microsoft's database of updates and upgrades available as of right now for your machine.

Enjoy tuning up the use of your DVD RW, man.
