Problem with msconfig utility changes

Jul 22, 2007 1:34PM PDT

In 'System Configuration Utility', I changed from 'Normal' mode to 'Selective Start up mode'. System started well in selective mode.

Later on, I wanted to take it back to 'Normal' mode, whenever I come back to this utility, check the appropripate box and follow to 'Restart' as per the messages, everytime after 'Restart' system goes back to 'Selective mode'

How can I take it back to 'Normal' mode. Because of 'selective' mode, system is NOT recongizing my CD/DVD drives and I am therefore unable to boot it with original XP CD too. Many other functions are also not working.

Any suggestions to help me out with this situation are most welcome?
Did anyone land in similar problems.

Are you receiving any error messages regarding the CD/DVD driver or msconfig? What happens when you place a music CD in the drive?

Go to http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php
and scroll down to HOW CAN I DISABLE THEM FROM RUNNING AT START-UP? and read #3) System Configuration Utility (MSCONFIG) - Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP.

I'm pretty sure it should not make a difference rather you use Normal or Selective startup. It seems that once I uncheck and delete a startup entry in the msconfig utility I have to live with Selective startup. But as I mentioned, it [shouldn't] matter.

Could it be that the CD/DVD drives are listed in msconfig? If so, that may well be the problem. I would see no reason for them the be there. The XP CD has an auto start command and should open after you have placed it in the CD drawer, shut down the computer, and boot the system using the button on the front of the computer. You can also try opening My Computer, right click on the CD or DVD drive and select Auto Play tab, Prompt me each time to choose an action, and click OK.
It may be necessary to restart the computer for the change to take effect.

Hope this is helpful.

Caktus is on to Something. I Have Been Running.....

my XP Pro on Selective Start Up since almost day 1 (3+ yrs) and have never seen problems such as you describe.

Did you uncheck "Local" Plug & Play (v/s Universal Plug & Play which I turned of as possible security problem) by mistake?? Local is OK & can be left running.

If I recall correctly, when changing back to Normal start-up, there is a button/box for "enable all" which should be checked as "normal" includes all registered items to start up folder. Likely why not changing back.

Personally, I have Spybot S&D & it has a similar tool for startup enable/disable temp/or permanent which I find easier to use. "Tools" is only available if you set S&D to startup in "Advanced Mode".

Either SA&D or Config/selective is needed to keep un-necessary items from slow boating your boot up. I cut from 1 3/4 minutes to 45 seconds which adds up at every boot. Bonus: Machine runs faster in general (80 G HD/512RAM).
Some items you use frequently can be disabled at start if you put a RIGHT click "send to Desktop" shortcut on your desktop to that item (exp: Media Player, Adobe Reader or even printer) which will just take a second or 3 extra to come up to active speed. They will still function normally when called for locally (press print) or from net call (Media Player upon viewing online clip etc.).
Good Luck! Grin
