problem with internal speaker

Oct 1, 2006 6:25PM PDT

hi, i have a speaker problem on my black macbook. it won't work. also, F3, F4 and F5 volume keys didn't respond. but, if i use an earphone, it works just fine. the volume keys also respond perfectly. but as soon as i unplug the earphone, no sound. i tried it on iTunes, and QuickTime. i tried to restart, shut down, double-check the sound on System Preferences, but still no sound.
the problem just came out this morning.
oh also, the start-up chime came out normally everytime i start.
can anybody help me with the problem? thank you in advance.

This machine is under warranty?

If the answer is yes, then contact Apple Support and tell them about your problem. Get a case number and follow it through.

The start-up chime would indicate that the speaker is functional. Can you confirm that you have directed the sound to the Internal Speakers, that the volume slider is fully to the right and that the Mute check box is unchecked?

Did you installed any new software just prior to this problem appearing. This includes that installed through the Software Update function.

In the Sound preference item, select the "Output" tab. Is "Balance" in the middle?

strange thing happened. suddenly it works. but just about now when i started my mac all over again, it stops.
i'll take it to Apple Support first thing tomorrow.
i'm just curious bout it. i did everything u guys suggested, including balancing the output, check and uncheck the mute. it's also stated that the sound output use internal speaker, built in.
the balance slider works just fine (i tried it with earphone).
thank you for everything guys. i appreciate it. now it's Apple time to do their job.
