Problem With Installing Online Scanners Databases....

Oct 4, 2008 11:54AM PDT

My laptop has Windows XP with service pack 2, and I have been having trouble installing the database of 3 different online scanners; Microsoft's, Ewidos and Emisoft.

Though, I have been able to install and use ESET's online scanner, Kaspersky and Trend Micro, I would really like to add those 3 other scanners to my computer's arsenal.

However, with all 3 I end up getting an error message, usually not long after starting the process of downloading the database.

The error message isn't specific, but whatever it is, the process is brought to a halt and no matter what I have tried, I can't get either one of those 3 online scanners to install.

My Java applet is up to date.

I have tried turning off my antivirus program and firewall.

I have made sure I added the sites to the "trusted" list.

I have made sure my accelerator program was off.

I have even tried using Firefox instead of I.E., yet those 3 scanners just won't install.

Is there anyone out there who has some answers or suggestions?

Becauase, I sure can't figure it out.

I Can Try That, But....
Oct 4, 2008 5:04PM PDT

Thank you for the tip and the links.

It may be something I'll try.

However, I have had the same problem on both my laptop and my desktop.

My desktop has Windows XP Pro with service pack 3.

An important thing I neglected to note in my initial post is every download I have performed from sites other than CNET have downloaded and installed without any problems whether I had accelerator turned on or off, so lately I have been trying to find alternative websites to download files I would normally download from CNET.

Does that additional information give you any further insights into what the problem is?

I Apologize...

Sorry, I answered the wrong question when I replied to your post.

The question I answered was regarding a problem I have been having with CNET lately with regards to corrupt files.

With regards to the accelerator/online scan issue, I gather from what you are saying some online scanners will fail to install if accelerator is on or off whereas other sites have no conflict with it?

If that is the case, I will definately take your advice and try those 3 scanners again.

Sorry for the typo.

After seeing too many charged by our tech staff to uninstall those accelerators I have come to a conclusion. These are only good to line the pocketbooks of others.

Hope that was clearer.

Interesting...

Being I have only had dial-up at my disposal, my accelerator program (Earthlink Accelerator) has saved me a great deal of time and helped keep my blood pressure low on many occasions, for when it's turned off there is a significant lag in loading web pages and downloading, so although accelerators may cause more problems than they are worth for most people, I probably would have had a stroke by now without it.

So, it's hard for me to imagine life on dial-up without my accelerator program.

And, honestly, it's never interferred with downloading in the past.

I can only recall one website that instructed me to turn off any accelerator program before downloading.

Otherwise, I have downloaded everything successfully using Earthlinks Accelerator program.

However, when it comes to doing online scans, perhaps it's a different story. Yet, I have been able to scan with Trend Micro, Panda, Kaspersky and ESET with the accelerator installed.

So, if I understand you, you are saying there are certain online scanners that will fail to install with an accelerator program installed even if it's off?

And, if I uninstall it and the Ewidos, Emisoft and Microsoft online scanners still don't work, what else could I try?

In other words, couldn't the problem be something other than the acclerator program being installed?

Your choice here.

Sorry but no customer currently is on dialup. Continue with what you do but remember we still have a history of such costing the owners dearly.
