Problem with HP My Book External Hardrive

Please help, my external hardrive just went fritzzzz. It only clicks and the laptop or desktop won't even recognize it. I never dropped it ( it worked great up to one morning when the problem started ) and its been taken great care of. I'm looking for any company that can fix it, I've been told that it could be fixed ( hardware wise ), not to buy another one and transfer data ( you got to understand that it went to a war with me, kinda sentimental value ) I really need to fix it.
Thanks for your time.

So why not do it yourself?

In reply to: Problem with HP My Book External Hardrive

Most of these just need the hard disk moved into a new enclosure. Not too hard to do and can run from 20 to 60 bucks tops.

I'll love to do it, but I'm not that tech-inclined LOL....do you know of somebody that can do that kind of job? Any sugestions?

Unless you are lucky.

In reply to: Explain??

Many shop counters charge the 120 buck service charge for that work. It's usually just some 8 philips screws to remove and put back in. With all due respect is that considered technical today?

Yeah, I guess I can do it myself, can you please tell me what I need to buy ( exactly what I should be looking for! )and of course instruction on how to separate the Mybook case apart? I'm afraid to break it.

Isn't it broken already?

In reply to: LOL

That is, the device is broken so we can't break it further.

For me I ordered 2 of these just last week: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=BLK-35U2-SATA There are MANY more like this at newegg.com, geeks.com, amazon and even stores. I would peg the HIGHEST PRICE that would be acceptable at 50 bucks.

As to disassembly, let's see what others are writing at http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=HP+My+Book+External+Hardrive+DISASSEMBLY&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=

http://www.carltonbale.com/2008/01/western-digital-my-book-opening-the-case-removing-the-drive/western-digital-my-book-disassembly-5/ shows what I know as a SATA hard disk connection.

Hope this helps you along.

Just so you know, this is NOT A SURE FIRE FIX. It has helped a lot of people many times to get the drive working again without data loss. However the drive can fail so the fix I noted here is all of 20 bucks which is not much compared to data recovery houses.

I'll get to it and keep you posted...

In reply to: THANKS !!!

I cant open the case it has a metal bracket holding the guts of the HD to the external case, I have no idea how to disconnect it without ripping it out. I tried for abt an hour and nothing, looked at it and brainstormed and couldn't come up with a way to separate it.
Please help
