Drivers and Ram

Go to Ati site and download the latest drivers for your version. Also make sure you have enough Ram support. 512 should cover it.

I have had a lot of problems and my card is relatively new (9700 Pro SEC) I downloaded catalyst drivers and it conflicted with my old ones. I have read that early Ati was known to be pretty unstable, hence my suggestion. That only leaves the memory question. Try to see if your Virtual Memory is set to 'Let the system manage memory'. Or increase it if under 512Mb.
