Problem with external hard Drive

Jan 26, 2006 6:28AM PST

I have a Maxtor 3100 external hard drive. I've recently upgraded to a new laptop and the new machine does not recognize hte device as a drive. When you click on the USB port properties or the safely remove hardware function, it does indeed recognize what kind of device the unit is. How can I get the HD to show up as a Drive?

Perhaps you could

Delete it from device manager and see if the Fund new hardware function restores the connectivity and access to the drive.

USB 2.0 external drive recognition troubles
Jan 26, 2006 1:11PM PST

After uninstalling the USB2.0 to remove the yellow warning, the drive will be recognized on a reboot automatically. The sad part is that recognition is removed on a reboot most of the time, but not always. When it does lose on reboot, the yellow warning comes up on the USB2.0 in file manager, has to be uninstalled and rebooted for recognition. None of the other drives do that. It is a 120GB WD drive, not a Maxtor. The other drives are 2 Maxtor and 1 Seagate. This drive will usually hold the connection when on Hibernate, but not always. None of the externals are set up for boot drives. I use externals for data storage, for I have had too much stuff lost due to crashes when using internal drives for storage. One of the externals is used for backups.
