Problem with DVDWriter 300c

May 23, 2004 4:25AM PDT

The DVDWriter that came with my HP computer is acting up. It will not read any data cds. It will however play music cds and DVD movies. It will not write any CD-Rs. It doesn't see the CDs. The disks just spin for about 20sec then the light goes out. When you go to 'My Computer' and click the drive you get a screen with no files listed. Anyone else ever have this problem? Know how to fix it? Or is my drive dead.

There is some issue with Roxio or other software that installs what is noted as Upper and Lowerfilters. Some may be unaware of this issue or that some driver/other update diddled with the filters. This is OS SPECIFIC and no OS is mentioned so I'll just supply a link which may not apply.

Again, what you need to research is that partial failures can occur and removing these entries may fix it. I will not supply an article about this, but you can research such on Google.

Thanks. I had already deleted the upper and lower entries. It is not that the OS doesn't see the drive. It does. It is it won't read or see the CD that is in the drive.

Just asking.

With each post is this tip:

"If you are asking for help to troubleshoot a computer-related problem, please be sure to include all the necessary information (ie: operating system, model number, hardware, software, etc) that will help others identify your problem for a speedy resolution."

I offered one possible answer, and may have been too subtle that the OS can be part of the problem. If you could be kind enough to fill in the missing information, maybe someone will come up with another idea?

Be sure to include that you installed any CD "emulators" or such in your post.
