Jun 4, 2009 7:08AM PDT

Laptop par:
Intel Core 2 Duo T7100, 1,8 mhz
Nvidia geforce 8600gs 256mb
samsung HM160HI 160gb
vista ultimate x64 sp1
Problem:
I can read cds (listen music, install and etc.), but i can't record even an audio cd.. i tried different software (from nero 6 to 9, roxio and many more).. then i tried to fix with regedit, but there are no such upper or lower filters.. i tried unistalling and reinstaling drivers (os makes it auto).. i tried changing DAO or TAO, writing speeds, DMA changes..
here is something from NERO 8 ultimate log file:

I'm fascinated with this line.

"DRM: Closing entire DRM handling. Bye."

This is typical if the audio file is copy protected or DRM'd.

Can you tell more about this audio file?

i can, but i suppose that the problem isn't there, because i've succesfully burned that audio cd on another cdrom..
the tracks are riped from "Paul Kalkbrenner - Berlin Calling", no copyright protection or smth, i think..
the problem starts after begining of burning and verification.. take a look:

"because i've succesfully burned that audio cd on another cdrom.."

Now that is also interesting. All these messages can also point to a failing drive or bum media.

When I see this I always swap in a new drive and re-test. At the very least we'll try it on an external DVDRW drive we use around the office.

Other format?
Jun 4, 2009 4:24PM PDT

Are you able to burn other formats instead of pure audio, say like as data disc? If you have iTunes, are you able to use it to burn?

As it seems like the problem starts before the burning (after caching the files to burn), are you able to change the temporary caching location to another drive or is there enough space in the temp drive concern?

Try alternate disc media (DVD-RW, CD-RW) instead and prior to that, try erasing the disc, if it doesn't work, likely a failing device, else, the corruption in a file, insufficient temp space, added copy-protection created by the program.

media decisions

data burning also failed.. haven't tried dvd, but i think the same will happen.. no, i don't use itunes..
changed temp file cache to another hard disk (15gb free space) - no changes..
still haven't tried with different brand media (recently used acme and verbatim), hope this will be the problem..
thanks for answers..

Once you change the media.

This becomes the classic symptoms it is time to replace the drive.

What you do notice is that most owners will try for months to avoid this. This is why we swap the drive in minutes to demo the working new drive.

Invariably about half the owners ask how to get the old drive working. We've asked the technicians to stop laughing when they hear that.

Dumb Question
Jun 5, 2009 5:27AM PDT

I have to ask though. Is there anything with that drive that says you can actually burn a disc? I don't read anything that says you have a drive that does. However I didn't google your part number and just went on your post.

Smart (?) answer.

What did the front of the drive says? DVD with +-RW?

Another Dumb Question
Jun 5, 2009 11:32PM PDT

Is it even possible to get a laptop as "modern" as the one the original poster has WITHOUT the optical drive being capable of burning discs? Just curious.

Yup.
Jun 6, 2009 1:58AM PDT

We even find machines with no drive. I found a few laptops with DVDROM drives installed. I can't guess why those had that. Probably a government job.

thanks for the criticism..

i tried changing media cdr - cdrw media (4 brands).. no changes happened..
tried burning files into a dvd - burning 100 % succesfull.. ***?

thanks for all the help... bye

Sorry.

But I don't see where that's a criticism. I know of a certain .gov office where recorders are banned. How could I know you would find this offensive?

-> Back on topic. Your posts are typical of the usual failing drive. And typical of owners that want it to be anything but the drive. There is another out. Go get some USB DVDRW drive. These run from 99 to 25 bucks.
