problem with CPU or MOBO?

May 17, 2005 2:34PM PDT

Hi i have put together my own computer. I had a problem with the CPU a couple of months ago, and sent it in for warranty service. The computer has been working fine since then, but now my bios and Windows is reading my AMD 2800XP processor as just an AMD 1.24 mHz processor. And my computer has slowed down considerably. Any ideas as to wat may be wrong with the system? Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance for any help.

I had the same problem after I changed my cpu from an xp1700 to a 2600. The advice I got from a helpful person on CNET, said to check my Manual and change the jumper setting on the MOBO itself, or reset the FSB speed in the Bios. The jumper change worked for me. Good Luck

1.xx Mhz?

you sure that's not Ghz?

even so AMD's do run slower than their number says i assume you know that. that sounds just a bit slow but AMD's been more into effiencency than speed. for example, i've got an amd64 3200+. the core actually operates at just over 2 Ghz. so just because windows doesnt read it as a 2.8 ghz dosent mean there's soemthing wrong with it necessarily. was windows and your bios reading this clock as a higher rate when you first built it or something cause for a 2800 i would think the core wouldnt be running much over 1.5 ghz.

as for system slowdowns. you've gone through the spyware and virus scan options correct? just being sure of the obvious

Wrong

many amd processors run over 2ghz. All modern amd cpus run over 1.8. I own an xp 2800 and it's stock speed is 2.08. Go into your bios settings and change the clock speed. If your motherboard doesn't have preset speeds then look up the multiplier and bus speed online.

ah ok

i jsut assumed it the clock speed was based on a constane level of effiencny the cpu was after. live and learn...
