Problem with connecting IDE drive to HDD docking station

Jul 28, 2010 5:32AM PDT

Hi,
Just bought an ALL in 1 HDD docking station for Sata/IDE drives. I want get information from a laptop's 2.5' Ide drive. When I connect it, device manager shows it a half of minute, but can't populate volume. Tried it with 2.5' IDE drives, same story. Again I connected a Sata drive which works fine as well as cardreader, usb etc. Finally, connected two 3.5' IDE drives one after another, but the problem remains. I'm using Windows 7 (32 and 64 bits), however tried it on Windows XP pro SP3 with no success again. Any minds?

dock or USB adapter. Some USB-IDE interface chips cannot work when the PC has no IDE drives inside.

I'll try this

So if I understand you correctly it should when I connect it to a computer with IDE hard drive inside?

It should

but then again it might not, depending on the IDE controller and OS. Won't hurt you to try but first make sure the IDE drive you put inside is not formatted. Why? You don't want the OS to think it has another drive to write cache files.

hi...try formatting
Start->Control Panel->Administrator Tools->...I think you should know the rest...

If using the Esata doesn't work, does the USB work?

Its important that which component is the problem one...dock or HDD.

I hear that a unitek dock can use any of several connection types (USB, Firewire 400, Firewire 800, and e-SATA)

Hi just bought the above docking station and when i connected it it kept being recognised and then not recognised,it drove me mad and no matter what usb port i used. Then a realised that it needed a fast usb port so i installed a pci express usb card which cost only a few pounds and connected it to that usb port and wamm bamm fully operational.Ive sorted through all my sata and ide hard drives and labelled them.Fantastic bit of kit.
