Problem with connecting Denon 1706 to computer

I have connected a Denon 1706 receiver to my computer using an optical cable and set the receiver to the video input to which the optical input is assigned; I have made sure that the optical port is set as the audio output on my computer and that it is actually sending out a signal. However, no sound is coming out of my speakers or my headphones when I connect them. Am I missing something?
