Slows down surfing, or the entire computer?

In reply to: problem with avg 8

After installing AVG 8 a couple of months ago, I found that one of its new features, the link scanner, was slowing down by search results by trying to scan every link on a page. I found directions (which were a bit involved) on how to install it without this feature. I have heard, however, that they have now fixed problems with this feature--not that I really want it anyways, Firefox already does this. Anyways, if this sounds like the problem you are describing google it or let me know and I'll post the link to the directions in a reply. I'm assuming however that you are talking about a recent installation, which should have fixed the problem. If you are using an older .exe, you might want to uninstall and try with a newer one.

Roxio is CD-DVD Burner software

In reply to: avg slowing down

I did find other threads here complaining of the two programs being in conflict--I have Roxio CD creator and AVG 8, and I haven't noticed any problems. If you know you want them both, you might try reinstalling them. On the other hand, there are other good dvd burning programs out there so you could probably live without Roxio.

OK still not sure what version of AVG 8 you have. If your computer has slowed down internet connection only (like mine did), I'd recommmend an uninstall of AVG 8 and then a reinstallation based on the following instructions (be sure to place the copy of AVG 8 in the C folder (and not any subdirectories).

Look here:

Look for q. 1338, on how to install AVG 8 w/o link scanner. ou can copy/paste the file path to place in the Run field, but you will have to then copy/paste the localized version info (at the end of the file name), in the place of the asterisk in the path--for example, in place of the asterisk I had to enter en_8_100a1295. The path works if you have placed a copy in the C directory, so be sure to do that.

It worked for me. Like I said, Firefox already does this and I don't need two programs doing the same thing.

Going to other antivirus programs is always anotehr option, but I really like AVG's combined antivirus and antispyware--I do occasionaly d/l programs via Bittorrent and I like the fact that AVG 8 can detect trojans and other spyware, and not just viruses (AVG 8 is both antivirus and antispyware).
