Problem with an MS-DOS program running under Windows

Mar 23, 2004 1:08AM PST

I have an MS-DOS program that runs under Windows and just about every day, I get this error message which says:
"The program tried to execute an invalid instruction.
Fault location: 5D60:026C
Interrupts in Service: None"

I simply close the program and reopen it by clicking on the desktop short cut and the program runs fine for another day or so.

What is going on here? What invalid instruction is the program trying to execute and why? Is there a way to stop this from happening?

What MS-DOS program? Written yourself, or bought?
What is doing all the time, running fine?
Why an MS-DOS program?
Visited the makers web-site/FAQ-list?
Contacted the maker already?
Paid support?
What version of Windows?
Alternatives to using this program?

The program is PkGOLD Enhanced-PT, version 9.08. It is a program for packet radio and other digital modes and is a bought program. Yes, it runs just fine all the time. There is not a "Windows" version of this program. No, I have not checked with company that sells the program and I don't think there is Paid Support. Windows ME. There are some other packet programs that are Windows programs, but I happen to like this particular program very much. There is also another little problem that I have with it. Not really a problem since I know what to do about it, but if I shut the program down and turn off my TNC and then turn the TNC back on and try to start the program, I have to disable the COM port and then re-enable it before I can get the program to run. I didn't have this problem with Windows 95 or 98.

CWH,

Maybe....

InterFlex(TM) Systems Design Corp (PKGold)

Windows ME doesn't have tradition DOS like Win9.X. If you read carefully, you'll note that Win2000 suggestions indicate running the program in a command prompt, instead of the normal way from Windows. (Click on Start-Run, type "Command" (or cmd in some operating systems), then click on OK. You might try that.

Hope this helps.

"Windows ME" That's the item I'd check.

Windows ME was banned from the office due to simple problems in our DOS based programs. Here's one you can try at home.

10 LPRINT "TEST"

Just run up Qbasic from Windows 98 or even use QB 4.5 Compiler and Windows ME will fail in many ways on this one-liner.

Same code works fine on Windows NT 3.5, 4.0, Windows 2000 Pro, XP and of course Windows 95 and 98.

I think you've found your issue.
