General discussion

problem with access privileges

May 20, 2005 1:38AM PDT

Hi,
My problem is that when I try to open a encrypted file I receive a message saying that I don't have access privileges. I am the administrator and I encrypted myself this file. Please advice.
Thanks.

Did you take ownership of the file?

As to encryption, tell if you are playing with EFS. If so, the CREDENTIALS don't stick around on a reinstall and the only recovery I know of is over at http://www.lostpassword.com

I don't know what means taking ownership of the file and EFS. Please explain.

And I don't know what encryption you used.

Tell me more.

The system encryption program

The only XP Pro system encryption system is EFS.

But you didn't notice it's name so I can't tell if you used it.

BEWARE that EFS is not friendly to most people. The concepts are not transparent and losing the CREDENTIALS (see the Start, Help and Support topics) can me data loss.

What are the credentials? How can someone loses them?

Again...

It's in Start, Help and Support. But first a moment to write about how I help others. I never duplicate what's in the Help and Support content or what link I may supply. I don't hand out fish and I do expect you to dig in a little. I can't work at this.

So far, you have yet to reveal what version of XP you have. It matters.

I don't have any start - help and support.
My windows is version 2002 SP2

SP2 I know. But is it XP Pro or XP Home.

Only the Pro version has EFS and both have Start, Help and Support unless you turned it off.

Here's how to turn it back on ->

1. Press Start then Run then enter

services.msc

then click ok.

2. Find the Help and Support item which is required for Microsoft online help documents. And make sure it's set to Automatic.

3. Now make sure it's not unchecked from showing in the Start menu. Here's how. Right click on the TASK BAR, select Properties. Click the Start Menu tab, tab and then the Customize button. On the new box, click the ADVANCED tab and make sure the Help and Support is checked. Ok your way out.

In closing, here is an article about EFS. Remember that EFS is not to be used trivially and certainly not without some research. It is a fast way to lose access to files.

-> http://www.iopus.com/guides/efs.htm

Notice it warns "Important: Now its time to back up your private key otherwise you are in risk of losing ALL encrypted data once you need to reinstall Windows!!!"

There's no help and support in the location you specify. I couldn't find any such service. Sorry.

Then check that your menu is set to show it.

EFS is not to be used so casually. It's a "Pro" OS.

Delete not open encryted files
May 21, 2005 4:54AM PDT

You have answered your own question....

You are an Administrator but you did not give yourself permission to open these files. One of the provided links should tell you how to open said files.

Tho from Bob's post the options appear to be Slim To None, wiht Slim having left town.

The former links I followed without finding a way to grant me permision to open encrypted files. Are they other links?

Encrypted Links
May 21, 2005 5:34AM PDT

From what I understand you must set who has permission to open encrypted files. Your posts indicate you did not give yourself that permission.

As you can delete the encryted files you are an Admininistrator. You cannot open the files as you did not give your self permission.

Hopefully Bob will confirm that under these conditions the files are lost or provide a work around. This is His area of expertise.

Regarding a file is missing
May 21, 2005 5:35AM PDT

"a file is missing

A file is missing so help couldn't be opened. But I would like to know why I can delete and rename encrypted files and not open them? "

The missing file can likely be put back into place with the SFC /SCANNOW command. Unless you want to resort to only internet searches or buy books on this OS, I'd fix this.

As to renaming and deletions, that permission and right is not an EFS issue. Rename and delete are rights based on the settings of the directory settings.

The article I noted was a good primer on EFS. From your questions it appears you did not read it.
