Problem Windows Update

by bluelove73 / October 6, 2004 11:40 AM PDT

I go to Windows Update and it says it's checking for the latest software to let me know what updates I need, but it gets stuck there. It doesn't do anything after that... What's wrong with it? What can I do to make it check and tell me what updates I need?

Which operating system are you using? The Windows Update site is slightly different for Windows XP SP2 users, so the info would help.

Are you using Internet Explorer 6 SP1? (Windows Update works best when using Internet Explorer.)

In the meantime, make sure that the ActiveX controls are enabled in your Internet Explorer security settings. In addition, try looking in the "C\Windows\Downloaded Program Files" folder for the Windows Update ActiveX control. It should be named, "WUWebControl Class" or "Update Class", or something similar in earlier versions of Windows. If either one is there, delete the file. The next time you visit the Windows Update site, you'll need to re-download the file.

Hope this helps.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
