Problem viewing forums in Netscape

Nov 11, 2004 12:07PM PST

Hi, Lee.

This just started today -- in Netscape, the left 1-2 inches of the forum are off the left side of the page, and there's no slider bar to allow a complete view. This happened Wednesday overnight into Thursday sometime -- things were fine Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, but by around 10am PST there was this problem...
Thanks -- Dave K.

Something is changing.

It appears that new code is being put in on some views so they will use all that grey area, left and right for advertisements. I've seen that and wonder if that is what you are seeing.

Re: Something is changing -- forum-specific?

Hi, Bob.

This forum now seems normal, but Speakeasy still is missing the left margin (looking more carefully, it's probably about 3/4 - 1 inch). Still looks fine in MSIE (which I avoid whenever possible because of the increased virus/malware danger), though.

forum-specific?
Nov 13, 2004 12:28AM PST

It was something odd indeed. I only saw it on some, but not all forums and it varied with the branding.

Unless there's a post about what they are doing/attempting, we saw the same thing I think.

Re: forum-specific? No -- weirder than that!

Hi, Bob.

If you come into the forum and then view messages in a thread, they appear normal. However, if you have the URL for a specific message (e.g. via a Modalert) and jump diretly to it, then the view is farkled -- but only in Netscape (or at least, not in MSIE!) And it's still happening...

Yes. Still happening in Mozilla.

Didn't try Firefox yet.

It looks like the branding and adverts creep in. As soon as I try to make it happen, I can't!

Re: Yes. Still happening in Mozilla -- more

Hi, Bob.

Weirder yet -- if I jump directly to a linked message as the first message in a session, then the formatting is farkled. But as soon as I visit a message "the regular way," all subsequent messages appear normal -- including doing an immediate reload of the same message (in a second tab) that was originally farkled! And if I now use a new window to paste the exact same URL that was originally farkled into the window and go, it now appears normal. REALLY strange!

Just got it to do that.

I found that if I didn't log in, the view looks different if I open a recent topic from http://reviews.cnet.com/4002-7600_7-5082864.html than if I am logged in.

Not much of a clue, but at least I repeated it.

If not logged in I get some XP syle with overblown graphics and adverts aplenty, but login and do same and it's the more trim look.

Hey Dave!

You ever tried Firefox? I was using that for a while and really liked it over IE and Netscape.
