Problem using/ downloading AIM

Mar 8, 2005 8:13PM PST

Greetings,

FYI--I am currently working with the Windows XP operating system. I also have Nortan Anti-Virus, Webroot Spy Sweeper and Nortan GoBack on my system.-- THE PROBLEM-- A month or so ago I developed a problem with AIM. It would always lock up whenever I tried to open it. Around the same time I also developed a problem with MSN Messenger, but that program all of a sudden went away and that program started working again. So since my AIM was still not working I tried to delete it by going through the ADD/DELETE under CONTROL PANEL. The uninstall shield would begin the uninstall wizard but it would not finish or completely the unistall. An error message would come up saying "Could not open INSTALL.LOG file." So I tried to download AIM again by going to aol.com and when I accessed the download wizard it would download almost all the way to completion (according to that little green bar that fills up as the files being installed scroll across the screen), until it gets to the file "C:\...AIM\Sysfiles\imagehlp.dll" and then it locks up or get stuck. So it would seem that I can neither delete or reinstall AIM onto my computer. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!!!

No idea about that.

AOL is tightlipped on such issues. So look up GAIM on google.com and try that.

AOL im & MSN messenger

Aol im & MSN messenger both use a shared file. When you remove one the other doesn't work also.

What you need to do is uninstall both AOL instant messenger and MSN messenger.

Restart your computer

Go to

http://www.aim.com/

and download AOL instant Messenger and install it.

Restart your computer.

Then go to (but only if you want this)

http://messenger.msn.com/

to download MSN Messenger. When it asks you to open or save, choose OPEN. after the download it will install.

Then restart your computer.

Both should work fine then.

Let me know how you made out.
