problem uploading DV to external hard drive via iMovie

Hi. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but have hooked up a My Book 1T Home Edition external hard drive to my MacBook Pro via USB, and have connected my Sony HandyCam to my MacBook Pro via firewire. The "Import from" window has a "save to" option, but only allows me to select "Macintosh HD". Any suggestions as to how to enable the "save to" option to include MyBook? I don't have enough disk space on my MacBook HD to save it there, and this was the reason I bought an external drive in the first place...

formatted for OS X (HFS+(Journaled)?

Almost all commercial external drives come formatted as FAT and have file size limitations.

I'm guessing that the drive appears on the desktop as normal

It's quite possible that it comes formatted as NTFS too, considering the size. If it is NTFS, that means that not even the Finder can write to it without other software, let alone iMovie. Either way, the fix is the same: format it as HFS+.

Thanks for both responses. Yes, the my book icon appears on the desktop. Also, according to the soft copy user manual, the device is "preformatted to HFS+ (Journaled) for compatability with Macintosh operating systems."

Can you verify that? In Disk Utility (Applications->Utilities), if you click on the drive at the left side, it should give you some information at the bottom, including the filesystem, called Format. It should read "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" if it's formatted as HFS+.

How about that? It says "MS-DOS (Fat32)". Looks like I'll be reformatting! Thanks so much to you both!
