Problem setting up my home network

Mar 19, 2005 1:54PM PST

I have been trying to set up a network with my 3 computers for a couple months and I have had ongoing problems and hope someone can offer some help.
I am using a Linksys wireless G broadband router wrt54g on my main computer, and a Wireless G usb network adapter for my other computers. I have configured the router with my main computer and I have been online consistently for over a week, so I know I am getting a good internet connection with it. The problem comes when I try to "set up a network" As soon as I install the network adapter on the 2nd computer I lose my internet connection on my main computer not long after,,,, Even after unplugging the router and replugging the cable modem in I still have no connection. I have to do a system recovery and unplug my modem for 60 seconds, etc, etc to get connected again.
I don't know if I am causing the problem trying to set up the network. All the research I have done I have found that there are alot of steps that need to be taken when setting up a network and I fear I am doing something wrong. My router is set up for automatic configuration DHCP with a dynamic IP address. I am running Windows XP on both computers.

Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

More details should be given on the network devices....

trying to connect to the router.

Often times a USB device is not properly installed, (follow the manual precisely). Spyware/viri can wreck all types of mayhem on networking attempts.

Further, you mention 3 PCs, what does #3 do when you connected?

I haven't tried connecting the 3rd computer yet because I haven't been successful with the 2nd one yet. I have installed the wireless adapter the correct way. I just think I am doing something wrong when attempting to set up the network.
Thanks,
Steve

Spell out the steps you are taking in....

"setting up a network". The basics are:

1) workgroup names the same on both
2) file and print sharing enabled
3) something set to be shared (folder)
4) XPs firewall set to except file and print sharing
