Problem setting up a Home Network

Jan 15, 2005 4:17AM PST

Hi
We are trying to let up a home network. We are using a D link 604 router. One computer is running Windows XP home and the other Windows 98 SE. Both computers are successfully accessing the internet with it.

On the XP computer I am able to see the other one in My network places - but when I click on it I get a message "Joe (the computer name )is not accessible. You might not have permission to use the network resource. Contact the administrator to see if you have access permissions. The network path is not found."
On the W98 SE computer when it starts up - the following messages appear
Invalid value for binding specified.
Error loading device driver ND1SHLP.sys.
Error 7323: one or more network transport drivers failed to load.

No other computer shows in "Network Neighbourhoods" Also at the bottom of the screen there is a little computer icon that tells us that "Internet gateway is not configured" though the computer works on the internet without any problems.

I read in a search, a post by Tathraman- David in this group last year how when trying to set up his home network he got the same messages on startup on his w98 computer and was advised that they are not really an issue.

Was wondering if he was able to set his home network up successfully? if so - any tips?

Can anyone help? We suspect it is in the configration of the W98SE computer - but are not sure how to proceed.

Thanks very much

I had a similar problem, resulting from activating the pc firewall in addition to the router's.

Thanks - we are getting closer

Hi RBC
Thanks very very much. We changed a setting in Zone Alarm and it solved half of the problem.

Now the XP (home) computer has access to the W98. The W98 however can see the XP2 but can't gain access to the files. We have found some information - copy and pasted below which actually outlines our exact problem and suggested solution: (copy and pasted below"

" When trying to access a network drive or printers share on a Windows 2000/XP computer from a Windows 95/98/ME computer, you may receive an IPC$ dialog box like the one above. If you do, then you need to configure security on your Windows 2000/XP computer.
When Windows 95/98/ME tries browsing the Windows 2000/XP computer, it first must log in. The username Windows tries is the name that you logged into Microsoft networking with. When your Windows 98/95/ME computer booted up, you saw a screen like this:

You must create that name in Windows 2000/XP security to allow that user access to the Windows 2000/XP shares.
Creating a Windows 2000
From the control panel, double click the admin tools icon. Next, click the Computer management icon. This will bring up a screen like the one below. From here, open the Local Users and Groups tree and add a new user by right clicking on the 'Users folder' and select 'Add new user'.

Create a user name that MATCHES the user name used to lon into your Windows 98/98/ME computer. I would sugges assigning a password to this ID. I have sometimes had trouble in the past using blank passwords. ",

The only problem is that we are using XP home as opposed to PRO and can not find "Local users and groups" and from what we read that is because it does not exist in Home.

There must still be a way to get the home network working. Any ideas?

Thanks very much.

Some Basics

If you have software firewalls on both machines, you need to make security access entries in each firewall so that both computers trust each other.

You also have to set up File and Printer Sharing on both PC's. Then you have to set up your "Shares" on each machine.

Each PC has to have a unique name on the network, and you should assign them to the same workgroup.

If you search "Home networking," you should find plenty of info. I can't be too specific because I don't know your exact setup. I hope this helps.

Oh, and if you're on a wireless network with a router you have to make sure the information you enter for your pc's is consistent and entered there also.

Thanks Kansaidan - had previouslydone most of that.

the network is working 1 way - perfectly. The XP (home) computer can use the printer, see the shared that are on the W98.

The only issue that now remains is setting the network password on the W98 and then having it recognized i guess. I did copy and paste above the instructions I found and went on to explain that there is no "local users and groups" on XP home.

Besides that on the W98 - we are not even sure if there already is a network password in there becuase when we put something is it comes back invalid. If there is one - we can't change it since we don't know what it is.

Thanks
