Problem running Setups

Nov 22, 2003 5:40PM PST

Very recently i had tried to run a exe Setup program. The BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) appeared and computer stopped responding. when i restarted, Windows wont start. Then i restored an old copy of the Registry and it started working fine. when i tried running many other setups, most of them (90%) of them caused the same error. i have no problem running any programs. I also have this problem when i try to Uninstall an application. i have to antivirus AVG and PC-Cillin of which only AVG is active. i have updated both the anti virus. i scanned using both antivirus and found no virus. i use a Windows 98 system with 64 MB RAM, Celeron processor. Can anyone help Sad

BSODs have many causes. You need to tell us the exact error message you're getting.

Well here are the errors that i have collected.

This error occures most of the time. it also appears if the computers does not start and then i end up reverting the Registry:

A fatal exception ( 6: Invalid Opcode) has occured at 0028:00000238

It is a blue screen error.

Another blue screen error i got when i tried to install another app was:

A fatal exception ( OE: Page Fault) has occured at 0028:C1774127

hope this will be usefull.

Invalid opcode and such could be...

Exactly as noted. The file you tried to run is not valid and corrupt. I found this on many machines that used download accelerators.

If it sometimes works, then the hardware angle on those message could be simple. No one tells you that the CPU FAN slowly builds up a layer of insulating lint or fans fail in the box. A simple test to see if it's heat related is to shutdown, remove the case cover and point a fan at the internals. Boot up and see if the problem vanishes or occurs much much later.

well i do use download accelerator but i dont think that is the problem. i have tried installing the same Setup by taking it to a different computer and it worked fine. To make things worse, i reinstalled Windows 98. when about 17 minutes were left for the setup to complete the Reboot which occurs between Windows Setup took place and after reboot Registry Checker came up and restored with the Registry copy of this morning. i dont think the insterior has any problem but i will check into it.

what i am wondering here is are there any specific files used by Setups and UnInstallers Only?

Never dismiss items.

By not keeping all suspects on the list and ejecting what is "extra", you keep items on the machine that can interfere with the installer.

I always suggest that simplicity is best. Move to less things until you find it.

"what i am wondering here is are there any specific files used by Setups and UnInstallers Only?"

You would have to ask the supplier of the software. Microsoft did not enforce that any particular rules here.
