Problem running Defrag on Windows 98

May 27, 2005 5:11AM PDT

I have a Sony Pentium II 400 Computer, Windows 98 OS. My system is configured for 2 hard drives (C & D). I am having problems with my C drive. I cannot run Defrag; it starts over and over again. Defrag runs to completion on the D Drive. I tried to run scan disk and check/unchecked option to fix errors automatically.
I have event tried running defrag by first going to msconfig and setting options from normal to select.

I think the hard drive is just about gone now. I'm beginning to have missing links (pictures, hyperlinks) on web pages occasionally.

ScanDefrag

You can also get the free ScanDefrag. It is the most advanced disk maintenance program there is. It runs Disk Cleanup, ScanDisk, and Disk Defragmenter.

It's easy to setup and use, and it can deal with problems like "drive's contents have changed: restarting...".

Get it and read about all the options it has that you can use. It is a small download.

First configure Disk Cleanup (tick all options), then ScanDisk (as suggested by ScanDefrag) and at last Disk Drefagmenter.

Click RUN and let the process finish. If the HDD is as messy as it sounds, it may take a while to finish the 3 processes, but be patient, it will pay back.

DEFRAG.INF

Windows 98 users may use the DEFRAG.INF located in the \Tools\MTSutil folder on the Win98 CD. Copy it to the hard disk if you desire. (For further information, see the Mtsutil.txt file in that same folder).

I had less severe version of problem.....

and found it was mostly caused by all the background running programs that thought they should try to update every 5 minutes! This eventually lead me to learn how to disable most for better performance. If your HD is really that questionable (near end of life) Please do yourself a BIG favour and off load all the things you can't do without (personal items, photos, music, 3rd party programs, favorites/bookmarks links etc to either cds or portable USB storage device (I call them memory sticks) before disaster takes them from you!! Re-creating from a crashed HD is extremely expensive but a memory stick of 256 megs costs less than $30 and can hold probably all of it. Prices for these are dropping all the time.
My original Maxtor 40g was healthy for 4 1/2 years 'til power supply fried MB. Drive is still OK & is storage in new puter. It's now past 5 yrs. My daughter had 3 drives die within 3 1/2 years each loosing lots since deaths were sudden. Others have reported avg 1 year + a few months for their HDs. Good Luck! Happy
