Problem Running 2 External Hard Drives At Once!

Oct 21, 2006 10:55AM PDT

Both drives work fine when only one is hooked up to my pc, but when I try to plug the 2nd hard drive in neither drive works.
I have one Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 100GB
And one Western Digital My Book 320GB Essential Edition
Both USB 2.0
Maxtor NTFS and WD FAT32
My PC is an HP Pavilion m7480n. Thanks For Your Help.

Describe in detail what happens when neither works. No drive letters, can't write, etc.

Also, are you using the rear USB ports?

Different Problems
Oct 21, 2006 3:50PM PDT

Well I experience different problems with different combinations.
If I Have the Maxtor HD pluged in and working first, I'll plug in My Book and get a message that says ''USB device not recognized''. And in device manager I get a ''Code 10'' that says this device cannot start.

And when I have the WD My Book up and running first, I'll plug the maxtor in. The maxtor works fine but My BOOk just shows all the folders I have but no files in them.
So both drives show up in My Computer, But My Book shows nothing but empty files.

And yes I'm using the rear USB ports.

I'd update the motherboard drivers first.

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=816&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Home+Edition&lang=eng&strOSs=45&submit=Go%21 notes a date of 8/21/2006 and writes "This utility installs INF files that inform the operating system how to properly configure the chipset for specific functionality such as USB and AGP."

Also be sure to use the USB cables supplied with the product.

-> I can't guess if you are using odd software like DEMON TOOLS or other. But do know such things can cause issues like this.
