Problem recieveing packets /w wireless card

Apr 4, 2005 12:50PM PDT

First of all, desktop #1 has no ethernet modem and I cant change the router configurations through it, so I connected it to desktop #2 to save the settings on the router. (I dont know if this is a problem)

This is how everything is connected:

The Cable Modem goes through USB to desktop #1 (this internet connection works perfectly)
Then from the Comcast Cable Modem, through a Cat5, it is connected to a NetGear MR814v2 Router with nothing else connected.

Now when I goto desktop #2 (20 feet from desktop #2) and connect to the wireless connection with a NetGear WG311v2 Wi-fi Card it seems to connect properly. But once I recieve 60 packets it will not go up further, and am not able to connect to the internet in general. Sent packets seem to go through. My IP address is valid and it has no problem retrieving it.

Any ideas why this happens would be much appreciated.

Modem -> Router -> Wireless to one Computer
|--> Usb to another computer.

The comp on the USB doesnt have a ethernet modem so I cant use a cat5 to it. Does that matter tho, if I set the router config while connected to another comp with a cat5.

I tryed with WEP and without, both the same.
Also both comps are on Windows xp home.

Just sharing.

One of our machines did something similar.

While Windows 98 was supposed to work, a recent update to 98se cured that one. Why? I may never know. There's something about USB that I'll always wonder about and that is why the vendors stumbled so badly with it and Bluetooth.

Have you read http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101261.asp ?

im using 2.0.0.7 firmware for the WG311v2
Apr 5, 2005 10:17AM PDT

Thanks, should I try reinstalling the card even tho im on windows xp and the firmware is 2.0.0.7? Also.. does it even matter whats going on with the modem -> usb -> comp? Might it be something with the cable modem?

Where's the router?

With the modem -> usb -> comp, I can't see how that would work.

So its not possible for me to setup the router settings, then put it on the modem and have it work? And totally forget about how the other comp is going through USB, because it wouldnt matter if its connected or not? or does it.

Your last post showed some odd setup that I can't imagine how it would work out.

Use only 1 (one) connection on the modem..

either Ethernet OR USB .. but not Both...

Modem --> via ethernet to the Router --> and to the pc's (can be wired or wireless)

OR

Modem --> via USB to the Router --> and to the pc's

NOT

Modem --> via ethernet to the Router --> and to the pc's...
and Modem --> via USB to the pc --> to a pc
