Problem on first boot with new motherboard

Jan 8, 2004 1:25PM PST

I just completed building a new machine. Specs are:
AMD64 Athlon 3000+
ASUS K8V Deluxe Motherboard
2 x 512MB Kingston PC 3200 DDR 400mhz RAM
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 128MB DDR Video card
Maxtor Serial ATA 80 gig HD 7200 rpm

My problem is that my HD is attached to my board at the SATA1 connection. There is also a PRI_SATA connection and I'm wondering if this would work better. I keep getting a message during boot saying "No drive connected to FastTrak controller, BIOS is not installed", but once I'm booted up, everything runs fine. Is this a problem?
Thanks
Dave

you can ask the board manufacturer that question, plus what does the manual say?

"My problem is that my HD is attached to my board at the SATA1 connection."

I don't see that as a problem.

"There is also a PRI_SATA connection and I'm wondering if this would work better."

You would move it there, perform benchmark tests and decide. My bet? Zip, nadda, diddly.

"I keep getting a message during boot saying "No drive connected to FastTrak controller, BIOS is not installed", but once I'm booted up, everything runs fine. Is this a problem?"

There are other informational messages as well. Imagine the call to "Tech" about "Primary Slave - Not Detected." Hint: no drive was connected there. Sometimes I wonder if we do need to move to some X-Box style of BIOS.

PS. I re-read my response and see it could be misconstrued as slighting the poster. I'll let it stand without rewrite and instead add these words. It's all written to bring the issues to the forefront and light and not to discourage you in any way.

Thanks Bob,
The confusion was that I had never used any Serial ATA parts before. I didn't understand why there would be two possible places to connect my HDD to the board, as there is only one place to connect a Primary IDE device and one place for a Secondary IDE device. Now that I have asked....I know. Remember that there is no such thing as a stupid question. As far as the BIOS goes, I fully understand how to move around it and how to change settings, etc. My motherboard manual seems to leave out some critical information and is not very good for troubleshooting, therefore I was hoping someone also has this board or knows of these problems. My question about the "FastTrak controller" was because I thought that perhaps if my HDD was connected to PRI_SATA, performance could be higher. Again, I didn't know. I don't need to manage my BIOS through a gaming console interface with a gamepad. I'm not an idiot. I am not the type to look at the TV and wonder why it isn't working without first looking to see if it is plugged in. However, I do appreciate your acknowledgement that your words could have been viewed as "slighting the poster". Perhaps next time, you will see that I am simply asking questions about things that I have not previously dealt with. I also very much appreciate your help with my questions that have been coming fast and furious since I put this new machine together. Your input has actually been invaluable this past week.
Thanks again and I'm sure there will be more questions to come.

More than you need to know about SATA...

Beyond all this, an ongoing problem in the motherboard industry is the education and documentation area. The push for lower prices pulls the documentation levels to new lows.

While I could re-write response over and over to avoid bruises, this would limit how many responses I can produce or I would have to forgo a response because I couldn't find the right set of words to pull the issue into the light and not slight the person. Examples abound where we can dive into why 256 MB modules don't work on all motherboards of the BX variety and I can simply state why, but my answer needs a light background in computer design. Its my choice to not teach computer design, but try to cut the answer down to the bone and state where to get the right memory stick. While it may be interesting why the stick doesn't work and never will work in the said board, the discussion could (and has) dragged on with the requestor being unhappy that there was no way to make the sticks work. So they are unhappy to have to know a lot of CPU design to understand it doesn't work (key word = unhappy) and are unhappy if you state that that A25 isn't produced on the chipset and you'll have to get the right memory stick. And even more unhappy since no explanation of what A25 is and being told the stick is the incorrect. The key word still being "unhappy."

While I could just not respond to such traps, its my choice to just move forward and try to find some middle ground of providing a quick answer or a web link and moving on without too much concern over the person's feelings. If I see the post is just too close to slighting the poster, I will rewrite it or just add a note that I'd rather just post it and get the information and discussion flowing.

.......................................

So, in the end, SATA is a little more forgiving about which connector to use, and the message is still very much like the IDE Primary Slave not found error, which is not an error, but informational.

Quick answer ... If you run a RAID based mtrbd., disable or run pgm. that does same. That same feature maybe found in the bios setting, verify.

good luck -----Willy
